I am a graphic design major, focused primarily on print work, but see that more employers are asking for web design. Can anyone recommend books that help someone who wants a basic grasp of the field? I’ve used dreamweaver before as well.

Hi D,

I dont know about books to help you out with website design, but I have used Komposer in the past and found it to be quite an easy website designer to use.

komposer is a WYSIWYG editor so you dont have to know html.

How do I become a web design freelancer?

I did a couple of “unofficial” (read: under the table) freelance web design gigs when I was unemployed. Now I have a new full-time job, but it’s not in the web design field. And I think it would be a nice way to earn some extra cash on occassion.

How would I go about being officially recognized as a freelance web designer? Would I need to essentially start a business to get a vendor number, or something like that?

Please, only answer if you actually have a clue about this sort of thing.

Make a portfolio website. Maybe take a couple jobs for little to no cash to expand on that portfolio. Etc.

As far as being officially recognized, you could go ahead and register the business and get a federal tax id issued but that may be overkill at this point. In all reality you probably won’t get a lot of leads from the net when starting out but more by word of mouth so anything “official” early on isn’t all that important. Most likely the purchasing party will just 1099 you as an individual for tax purposes.

Everybody runs at their own pace. But if you are able to sit down and focus on it like 30 or 40 hours a week, I bet you will pretty much have CSS and HTML learned in a month. — I know it gets boring, but remember to do lots of repetition so you can get common stuff stuck in your memory.

If you want to expand your horizons to javascript and a programming language or two, that will probably take a few months.

You will never really be finished learning. There’s always somewhere that you can polish your skills or something new to learn. — Don’t forget to learn about making your designs work on multiple browsers. CSS3 is gaining popularity, so you will probably want to learn it later this year (if you haven’t already). And after that you can check the progress of HTML5.

I would suggest you keep an eye on craigslist for simple jobs that use HTML and CSS. You can also volunteer to do work for local small companies to expand your portfolio. (ones that do not have a website yet) They are getting harder and harder to find. – But I run across one every now and then.

As long as you know enough to photoshop yourself onto a background, all you need to do is set the background on your layout in a fixed format. CSS code for that is background-repeat: fixed.

Big question. There are lot’s of open source packages that allow you to create a forum type site with little work on the design end of things. The backend would still require a decent amout of work to ensure it’s working properly. Do a search for Joomla!.

As for creating web pages, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Expression or Front Page are quite good and are WYSIWYG editors.

its in a different language so i cant read it

but it looks good… try making the white background different put a pattern on it or make it a different color
