I just started a web design firm here in my town of 75k. I would like to see what would be the best way to get new clients. I already have a great portfolio (from freelance work I have done) and a very professional looking site. What is the best way to get new clients? Visiting actual businesses, cold calling, post cards, email, etc? Thanks for your help and suggestions.

For webdesign firm you can advertise on google adword, yahoo, msn ect low cost yet very effective & targeted customer base. Give high commision to those who refer you sales, need not to be you own sale staff. Can be gobal parnership since it a web design you can ship though line. Local directory, newspaper also very effective. You can also post your portfolio on elance.com, online classifield ect. gd luck!

I have some experience supporting a large website, but not with the entire design process yet. But I really enjoy doing this type of work and would love to make money doing it. I have most of the software I think I would need (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc), as well as space with a hosting service. I am still working on my personal website and I don’t have much to include for a personal portfolio yet. What would be the best steps to take to really venture out on my own by starting my own web design business and find potential customers? First, be sure you’re good at it. I know that sounds really critical, but there are a lot of people out there that enjoy designing websites and ‘think’ that they’re good, but they aren’t. Make sure you add value to the industry.

Next, try getting business owners you know to hand over their website design requirements. Build one or two for little cost. You’ll build references and a portfolio.

Then try to find places to gather new clients. Do you fit into a niche where no one else offers a good service? Do you provide back-end programming or just front-end design? There are hundreds of possible answers to this question but the first one will obviously be: online. Social media, paid search, organic search, video marketing, e-mail marketing etc should all be utlized to try and spread the word about your brand.

HOWEVER, if I were to give you on offline method for promoting you business then it would definitely be networking. I’m a member of a networking group in the UK called 4Networking.biz, they charge a £200 membership fee for 6 months, but in that period alone I can probably attribute about £9,000 of business to it.

Keep in mind my business is still going through the start up stages and I had next to no money to spend right at the beginning…networking is absolutely awesome.
