How can I combine my love for music, Computer Information Systems, and Web Design into a career?

Question by j y: How can I combine my love for music, Computer Information Systems, and Web Design into a career?
I have a passion for creating/recording music via beats and instrumentals while also singing. But at the same time I have a great passion for computers and web design to start an online business. I am caught between majors and feel as though I am at a crossroads but would like to know how I can turn this predicament into an inroads and combine all these paths into one. Any suggestions?

Is it better to go into architecture or web design?

Question by Antonio G: Is it better to go into architecture or web design?
So here is the deal. I am going to the National Guard in January, and when I return in March after 9 weeks of boot camp, I want to start enrolling back in college for my second degree. It’s going to be a degree in architecture, however, with the recent housing slump and the recession and all, is it a field that is worth going into? I figured that if that didn’t work out, I’d pursue web design, yet another passion of mine.

I used to work for an architect, but I left because he was a miserly old fool who cared more about how many hours you worked as opposed to how much you were worth.

Any suggestions?

Don’t go in to any computers or tech jobs. You will have a hard time getting a job becaues those are all filled by H1B visa workers from China and India, and an American can’t compete.

How far can one get into web design and development without college?

Question by Firework: How far can one get into web design and development without college?
I have an opportunity to apprentice as a locksmith, but I would still like to teach myself web design and development in my free time, which is what I was going to go to school for before deciding to become a locksmith. I would like to get very good at web design and development. I would like to be good enough to create professional looking forum sites and if possible, even a website like Facebook.

Well, if you’re self employed, you could probably go pretty far. You might need to pay for some online courses here and there, but I think you can find most of the stuff you need for free. Keep in mind that it’ll be moderately hard to do this, and harder still to get employers to actual consider using you, because no college degree does not look good.

College is not required for a career in web design.

You need to have the artistic skills and creativity to design cutting edge web pages, and be able to bring multiple pages together into a website.

You need to understand the social network, and have an elemental understanding of marketing.

You need to have good tech skills. HTML, Cold Fusion, PHP, whatever. Dreamweaver probably.

Then you start building a portfolio. Build out a website of your own. Make it look great. Offer to build a few friends a website. Volunteer for a church, or fire station, or something like that.

Then you have creative skills, technical skills, and a portfolio of your work that people can look at.

Print some business cards up, and constantly network. Hit sites like Craigslist and look for work.

Its not a hard career to break into, it can be a hard career to excel at, and make good money in.

However, it can be done.

College doesnt mean much. I would prefer a web designer with an art degree versus IT degree, and frankly it doesnt matter. Most great web designers are self taught.
