I am currently in my third year of college majoring in computer science. I would like to learn whats the best way to succeed in the field of web design and, how to prepare myself for my career. If anyone could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated; especially from those that are currently in the field with experience as well as those who are just getting out of college so I can have feel of what I’m getting into.

First off I should say that I’m not in the field! But I do know that it’s something that changes a lot and usually that kind of stuff you don’t really want a book, but a good website would be the best way to go since they get updated with new technologies and techniques. Hopefully the site would have a forum with good traffic so that you can ask questions and have them answered in a reasonable amount of time.

I have looked at a lot of ‘web design’ degrees and have found them all to be lacking in basic theory. They seem to lean towards technical wizardry, but away from the fundamental core of design theory.

whatever program you find, make sure that it has an excellent overall design department and requires a lot of theory and the fine arts.

Dreamweaver is just a program used to write the code. It’s not really obvious if it was used to create a site. If it was a framework, like Joomla, or WordPress then that would be different. But because it just writes code, it too hard to distinguish between Dreamweaver, or just notepad. And if they are a big and successful site, they would take out any tags that might identify how the site was created.

The short answer is, you’ll never really know.

I am a 15+ year veteran of print design. I dabbled in some web design and simple HTML programming, GoLive, etc. in the past; however, between having on-site programmers and transitioning to a position with no web design opportunities, the technology has eclipsed me. I am looking to delve back into web design & programming on a freelance basis and I am wondering if there are any good books out there to get me started. Anything from design fundamentals to basics of programming would be fantastic.

Hmmm, I am twenty years ahead of you. I did make a transition and now the work I did is outsourced.

There are plenty of html coders. The technology of the web is moving very fast. I anticipate the form-factor we call a computer to morph into smartPhones.

If you thought about being a coder, the goal will be to write that one program that everyone will buy from a download site. Or, the last of the real computer jobs involves database administration, specifically dealing with e-commerce.

Avoid the tech schools like the plague. Consider a community college taking fine arts, with a course load in web technologies and investigate marketing as a secondary choice.

Out of all the tech work I have done, I like Java. There always seems to be an answer with Java. Wander into a bookstore that sells coffee, grab some of the Java books and skim. See if you get anything from the reading. HTML is static. HTML5 will be focused on dynamic display with content delivery such as video.

I was planning in majoring in Theater Arts and Web Design. But I can’t find many colleges with both majors. What are some majors that are similar to Web Design or Web Development? Thanks!

Web design major has a few names. Some schools call it Multimedia or Media Art. Sometimes it is in an art department or a design department.

For example, if you go to UC San Diego you would want to go to the
Visual Arts Dept, Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts (B.A.) program.
San Diego State University has the Art Department program in Multimedia.
