How long does it take to learn web design?

Question by morticia: How long does it take to learn web design?
I’m a graphic design student, and I know how to work with the Adobe creative suite. I was wondering, how long will it take me to learn web design? I’m just starting to learn HTML and CSS. Thanks

It won’t take very long using tools like Dreamweaver or comparable GUI web design tools. You’re primarily looking at the learning curve for using the toolset which will depend on your ability to learn. I can’t make any assumptions about your ability but I’d say on average you could be creating websites with a new tool inside of a couple of weeks even if you’re a slow learner.

The real catch is how long it takes to make GOOD websites. That could take a lifetime or perhaps even never based on a lot of what I’ve seen online.

Everybody runs at their own pace. But if you are able to sit down and focus on it like 30 or 40 hours a week, I bet you will pretty much have CSS and HTML learned in a month. — I know it gets boring, but remember to do lots of repetition so you can get common stuff stuck in your memory.

If you want to expand your horizons to javascript and a programming language or two, that will probably take a few months.

You will never really be finished learning. There’s always somewhere that you can polish your skills or something new to learn. — Don’t forget to learn about making your designs work on multiple browsers. CSS3 is gaining popularity, so you will probably want to learn it later this year (if you haven’t already). And after that you can check the progress of HTML5.

I would suggest you keep an eye on craigslist for simple jobs that use HTML and CSS. You can also volunteer to do work for local small companies to expand your portfolio. (ones that do not have a website yet) They are getting harder and harder to find. – But I run across one every now and then.

How much preparation is needed to take a Web Design program at school and what should I do to prepare?

Question by : How much preparation is needed to take a Web Design program at school and what should I do to prepare?
I’m going to school for web design in January 2011 and I’m afraid that I’ll be surpassed by other students. I don’t know how much prior knowledge people go into the program with. I am fluent with HTML and CSS so I just need to know if that should be sufficient or what I can do to make absolutely sure I will be prepared.

the easiest way would be to have an online portfolio, contact informoation, and hand out business cards that redirect potential clients to your portfolio.

Can you take web design and graphic design classes at the same time?

Question by ♥: Can you take web design and graphic design classes at the same time?
Is it possible to take web design and graphic design classes at the same time? Also, for schools like “The Art Institute”, how many classes can you take?

If you mean: Is it morally acceptable? Are the two topics inter-relatable? Then yes, of course you can take both classes at the same time! If you are specifically asking about a school such as “The Art Institute” then the best thing for you to do is to look up the phone number for the branch you intend on attending classes at, call them, and ask directly– all schools play by different rules. Remember to ask questions directly whenever you can and to not be shy for not knowing. They should be more than happy to assist you with class schedules, credits per semester, and so on and so forth.

I however would advise you to avoid attending any of “The Art Institutes.” The label “Institute” is tricky and does not ensure a quality education… In which case you should also factor in the cost of attendance.

Anyhow, just call and ask and you should be fine.
